Karl Lagerfeld Helped Tommy Hilfiger Reinvent His Brand

Tommy Hilfiger  suffered poor sales in the late 90's and early 00's but was able to reinvent his brand. Tommy Hilfiger said Tuesday, he owes at least a bit of that success to Karl Lagerfeld.

When Hilfiger was trying to figure out how to turn the line around, he met with Karl Lagerfeld and asked him how he was able to reinvent Chanel successfully. “He said, ‘It was very simple. I looked at the Chanel archives and decided to modernize what existed already and make it relevant for today.’ As simple as it sounds, that’s exactly what we did,” Hilfiger said.

Now, Hilfiger has Peter Som consulting on the brand and made sure it has returned to what it stood for over the years: “a cool, American classic brand — preppie with a twist. That’s exactly what we were when we started."

Tommy Hilfiger's Son Busted For Drug Possession

 TMZ is reporting that the 20-year-old rapper, who performs under the name Rich Hil, was pulled over in West Hollywood last weekend and Sheriff's deputies allegedly found the drugs inside his car. 


Sources also told TMZ that Hilfiger, who recently recorded a track with Kid Cudi, was arrested and booked on one felony count of possession of marijuana for sale. His bail was set at $20,000 and posted the following night.

 father instead of Tommy, just saying).

Tommy Hilfiger Is Up For Sale

American brand Tommy Hilfiger may be up for sale today, as the private equity firm which owns it, Apax Partners, has reportedly begun gauging interest in the company. The leading candidate to acquire the label is the Phillips-Van Heusen Corporation, which also owns Calvin Klein.

The buy-out would give Phillips-Van Heusen control of Hilfiger's international network of retail stores and would give it a strong base across the numerous categories in which Hilfiger trades; including menswear, womenswear, childrenswear and fragrance. PVH already makes Hilfiger's shirts and neckwear under license, WWD reports.

What does Fashion mean to you, is it a concept or a word?

Fashion means style, it's about expressing yourself through your clothing choices.

If you were starting as a young designer today. What one job is most important?

I think it is really important to have a sense of business. As a designer you can get so wrapped up in the design and fashion side that you forget the business side.

Do you think a new designer should know how to sew, stitch or make they're own garment before outsourcing the work? 

I think knowing how to design something yourself from start to finish is helpful. Having said that, it's not necessary because with a vision and determination, you can do anything.

What do you think of reality television?

I think reality TV is a lot of fun to watch, I'm often very amused!

Have you ever been star struck?

Yes of course, I think everyone is at some point. One of my first was Elton John!

What is your favorite food?

Sushi

Who is your most respected influence?

I've been influenced by so many wonderful people in my life and career - Karl Lagerfeld, Obama, Martin Luther King Jr -Huffington Post

Peter Som To Become Creative Director @ Tommy Hilfiger

 Tommy Hilfiger has been looking for a creative director for his brand for several years, and now, insiders are saying that he could be close to inking a deal with Peter Som, who is allegedly in talks to join Hilfiger on a consultancy basis. Som, who graduated from Connectecut College and Parsons School of Design, launched his first collection at Bryant Park in Spring 2001 after working at Bill Blass, Michael Kors and Calvin Klein. His refined, ladylike sensibilities and have earned a steady stream of rave reviews and landed him the job as creative director at Blass before the house was shuttered last year.
