H&M launched their holiday 2009 ad campaign featuring models Sasha Pivovarova, Missy Rayder, and Malgosia Bela. With plenty party attire, lots of metallic, shine and sequins! The jury is still out on this, to much to digest all at once. Love the hair, makeup, and accessories. I keep thinking about The Gap.

Luxury Brands Forced Into Social Media

Jimmy Choo for H&M Autumn/Winter 09 | Source: H&M

Luxury fashion companies are known for setting trends when it comes to their products, but their media preferences are surprisingly dated. Most prefer to simply buy ad space in publications where they can present--and control--their image in glossy two-page spreads.

Why is it time for these companies to "get social"? Let's start with the obvious and compelling numbers: About half of the U.S. adult population is actively using social media Web sites, according to a Travelers Enterprise market research study conducted in August. And, according to Facebook statistics, among the next generation of luxury consumers--Generation Y--96% are using social media (the end lol).

Nanette Lepore Is Fighting To Save The Garment District Where Was Everyone Else

On Friday afternoon, a group of fashion advocates, including designer Nanette Lepore and Representative Diane Waston (Democrat of California), gathered in the representative's Washington offices to discuss the state of the fashion industry and demonstrate their support for the creation of a fashion caucus in congress
Among the items on their agenda: the protection of intellectual-property rights for designers, the creation of enterprise zones across the country to promote local talent, and the need to ensure that New York City’s garment district doesn’t become a denizen of more condos and tourist traps. “This caucus isn’t about the image of fashion, it’s about the business of fashion,” said Christine Brooks-Cropper. Where were the other big name designers DVF, Ralph, etc.

Sophia Neophitou Interview She Is The Creative Director At Harper Bazzar AKA The Next Anna Wintour

Editor-in-Chied of 10 Magazine and creative director for Rouland Mouret and Antonio Berardi, Sophia has pushed the boundaries of fashion with her incredible creativity and ground-breaking editorials.
Named “one of the most influential and respected creative forces in fashion by The Observer’s Life Magazine and having worked as Fashion Director for a number of luxury brands, including China and Russian Vogues and Sunday Times Style, Sophia shows no signs of stopping: “I am incredibly excited to be taking on this new opportunity at Harpers Bazaar.  It is a truly iconic title with global recognition and to be Creative/Fashion Director is a huge honour.”
What’s exciting in fashion right now?
The diversity of it all - the bold exploration that good designers achieve in their work. Definitely those who have the guts to put their individual visions on a catwalk with total conviction - they excite inspire and drive this industry forward, they are the creative explorers of our universe!
What trends should we be looking out for this autumn/winter?
None! Always look for individuality and how one achieves a personal expression every season, so eclecticism please!
Who are your favourite emerging fashion designers?
Well that’s a hard one. They aren’t that emerging and have existed for a couple of seasons now but definitely Mark Fast, Emilio De La Moreno for fashion, Maria Francesca Pepe for her jewellery. Camilla Skovgaard is an amazing shoe designer and Nasir Mazhar is a fab hatter.
What do you wish more of us wore?
White oh and heels of course! Flat shoes should be banned! Exception are Havaiana flipflops and gladiator sandals just! But never a squashy boot, NO!
What’s your favourite thing about London?
It’s creative energy, individualism and pure blind ambition and ‘can do’ attitude. Even on a shoe-string the Brits are unstoppable on every creative level! Rule Britania!
When did you know that you wanted to be a Fashion Editor?
Oh my goodness, very long story. I never trained in fashion at all. I worked for an architect on Berkeley Square and one morning woke up and couldn’t bear it any longer so promptly resigned and started working for a friend who was an interiors stylist. I decided that I loved magazines but fashion not interiors and so wrote lots of letters and did my first placement at British Vogue with Liz Tilberis, Sarah Mower, Sarah Jane Hore and of course Isabella Blow - it was an amazing time and experience and I knew then that I wanted to work in fashion even if it meant making cups of tea forever- I became instantly addicted!
What is your career highlight?
There are so many magical moments… Working for the first time ever as a Creative Director on a show with Antonio Berardi was amazing. I really loved being involved in those pure creative choices that affect what happens on a catwalk and that is the part of my job now that I love and value so very much.
Every designer brings something new and challenges my own aesthetic. I do adore the process, stress and all and of course starting 10 Magazine and 10 Men has to the biggest personal highlight/achievement and the most creatively gratifying thing I have ever done.
What is the worst job you’ve done?
Goodness working as a sales assistant in the Holiday and beachwear dept at Harrods where during the sales I had to be underwear police- yes I had to make sure everyone kept their pants on while trying on swimwear- brilliant! Lots of reprimanding and humiliating moments where I had to scream at women to put their knickers back on, brilliantly hysterical!!
What inspires you?
Everything- everywhere- always! Life in general really always keep your eyes peeled and mind open to everything!
What is it about fashion that you love?
Its everchanging face and its constant evolution and all the surprises every season.  - Fashion Life

Emily Gellis Interview Her Jewelry Line Tara&Miemy Is Worn By Jay-Z, Katy Perry, Rihanna, & Kanye

Joonbug.com Aliza Olin and Claire Smith met up with 23-year-old Emily Gellis, one half of the jewelry design duo Tara & Miemy, to talk about her new line and future plans for the brand.

Joonbug: Where are you originally from?

Emily: Originally Great Neck, New York, but I’ve been living in NYC since college.

JB: Where did you attend college and what was your major?

E: I graduated from NYU in 2008 and majored in Communications with a specialization in Economics.

JB: How did you to get into the fashion industry?

E: I interned for a year at Intermix and was eventually promoted to Assistant Buyer of Ready–To-Wear Domestic Collections. It gave me a real insight to the industry and helped me develop my own eye for fashion.

JB: What made you decide to start your own company?

E: My friend Tara (also from Great Neck, NY) had started to design some jewelry so I’d been helping her out and it just seemed to take off from there. The name came from a trip to Miami with my family and Tara where they would tease me saying “Miami, My-emy”, like a play on words of my name. So, when we came to name our jewelry line, Tara & Miemy just stuck.

JB: Where is the line available?

E: Right now it’s available exclusively at Blue&Cream who have a store in Manhattan and another in East Hampton. We will also be opening our own store around Broadway and 22nd called Ella, in February 2010. We’re planning to branch out into clothing as well as jewelry with a Ready-To-Wear, six-piece capsule collection. The store will be 50% our own line, with the other half featuring a mix of up-and-coming designers from around the globe that would be exclusive to Ella in New York.

JB: We hear stars like Rihanna, Jay-Z, Katy Perry and Leighton Meester have all been wearing your jewelry, how did this come about?

E: Jeff, the owner of Blue&Cream, helped us get connected with some good press. Tara and I ended up going to dinner with Rihanna and Katy Perry and we made bracelets for them on the spot. Since then, Rihanna hasn’t taken off the red evil-eye bracelet we made for her. Hopefully we’ll be seeing Kanye West sporting some of our pieces in the near future, too.

JB: What was the inspiration for the collection?

E: The whole collection is themed around good luck emblems. It started with an elephant necklace and we developed it to include other animals and symbols that represent good luck in different cultures like the dragon, and the evil eye. The overall style of the line is very eclectic, from fine gold and diamond pieces that are delicate and feminine, to edgier and rougher statement pieces like the skull and elephant necklaces. It reflects my wardrobe, where I’m constantly balancing girly and edgy looks.

JB: What can we expect to see from Tara & Miemy in the future?

E: Well, the Ella store will have a unique touch as it will be open from noon to midnight, combining a restaurant venue with a boutique clothing store. We will also be having a launch party, hosted by Joonbug, on September 10th. -Joonbug.com

Jury Finds Frederic Bourke Co Founder Of Dooney & Bourke Handbag Company Guilty Of Bribery-Related Charges

In the third day of deliberations, a jury of seven women and five men found Frederic Bourke, a founder of the accessories firm Dooney & Bourke, guilty of conspiracy to violate the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and the travel act and making false statements to federal law-enforcement officials. The charges were related to a scheme to bribe Azerbaijan government officials in connection with the privatization of the State Oil Co. of the Azerbaijan.

Our fine colleague at Dow Jones Newswires, Chad Bray, reports that Bourke was found not guilty of a single-count of money laundering conspiracy.

Nonetheless, the conviction on the other counts are sure to please DOJ at a time in which it has made foreign bribery and enforcement of FCPA a high priority.

Prosecutors from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Manhattan had alleged Bourke was aware of an improper scheme by Viktor Kozeny, president and chairman of Oily Rock Group Ltd., to bribe Azeri officials in order to allow an investment consortium created by Kozeny to buy a controlling interest in Socar. The scheme ran between 1997 and 1999. - NY Times

Glen Senk Explains His Journey To CEO Of Urban Outfitters And Anthropologie

I started earning money in my early teens by teaching others to ride and training other people’s horses. Then my father began buying young horses for me to train, compete with and then sell. I paid for my college and graduate school education with what I earned.

I graduated from New York University and the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business, but spending time with horses taught me the most. Showing horses teaches strategy, discipline, collaboration and patience. You learn to be fluid, to respond quickly, athletically and effectively to whatever comes your way.

I started riding again five years ago and compete about 15 times a year. It’s stressful being accountable to customers, shareholders and more than 12,000 employees. Riding relieves the tension. It’s a total release, and it keeps me in shape. Most people don’t realize the strength it takes to ride. You control the horse with your core muscles and your balance, and guide it with your legs. You’ve got to remain absolutely still — especially over the jumps — so as not to interfere with the animal. I practice about 10 hours a week, and I work out several days a week to maintain my strength and stamina.

By my second year in business school, I knew that I wanted to enter the retail business. Retail allows me to be master of my own destiny. I liked the fact that retailers have control over the products they carry, the selling environment and pricing. I also loved the theatrics of retail. There was a connection to the showmanship I have learned from my days with horses.

My first job after graduating was with Bloomingdale’s. I had nine great years there, starting as an assistant buyer and finishing as senior vice president and managing director of Bloomingdale’s by Mail.

My partner, Keith, and I had always been Anglophiles, so when I was offered an executive job at the retailer Habitat in London, we decided to move. We loved it there, but we were ready to come back to the States after a couple of years. I joined Williams-Sonoma in the United States as the head merchant for all five of its businesses. Two years later, I decided to leave to start a food business.

As I was developing the plan and raising the capital, I met Dick Hayne, the founder of Urban Outfitters. Dick offered me a job, but I was determined to start my own business. After another year of raising money, I realized that I was a better merchant than money-raiser. I returned my investors’ money and joined Urban Outfitters as president of the Anthropologie brand. Dick had promised to let me run Anthropologie as if it were my own, and he was true to his word. In 2007 I became C.E.O. of Urban Outfitters.

Keith is Anthropologie’s antiques buyer and gallery director. He and I split our time between Philadelphia, where our corporate headquarters is located, New York City and Florida. - NY Times

Unless you’re a foot fetishist, it’s not often that you’re looking at spreads of nude models and can’t seem to peel your eyes away from their feet. But that is the case in the Ellen Von Unwerth images featured in Casadei’s coffee-table to commemorate the Italian footwear label’s 50th anniversary, filled with beauties in some truly outrageous footwear and very little else. - Style
