Under The Radar: American Apparel Saved From Bankruptcy And Betsey Johnson's Ceo Leaves The Company After 30 Years

American Apparel is more than $91 million in debt and was facing the possibility of closing 280 store within the next few months. Now comes word that a british firm Lion Capital has changed the terms of its lending policy so thatAmerican Apparel won't go bankrupt, reports WWD. According to the terms of the new agreement, American Apparel must make a profit of $20 million over the 12 months ending Jan. 31, and must earn $80 million by September 2013. I don't see this happening, unless they start selling Chanel lol.


Betsey Johnson and CEO of her label, Chantal Bacon, announced her retirement today, but she’s been scaling back her responsibilities at the company since April, when it came to light that the company had defaulted on a $48.8 million loan. This announcement comes just a month after Steve Madden announced it would take over the responsibilities of the loan.

Steve Madden Takes Over Betsey Johnson Defaulted Loan

Steve Madden has taken over a $48.8 million loan for Betsey Johnson, that is currently in default. SEC documents filed Thursday show that if this loan is not paid by August 20, 2012, Madden will end up owning the Betsey Johnson's name and property. 


I love Betsey and wish her the best. There is no Betsey Johnson without Betsey's spirit and energy. The good news is Betsey will add cosmetics to her resume. There is a high anticipation for Betsey Johnson's cosmetic line so maybe it will help pull the company out of it's slump.

Betsey Johnson has collaborated with Tweezerman on a trio of Betsey Johnson Designer Series slanted tweezers ($25 each). The lineup includes a black with the Betsey "babe" face, a neon pink with white Betsey skulls, and a white with pink Betsey rosebuds. Look for the vibrant implements atSephora and Betsey Johnson boutiques starting Sept. 1.

Betsey Johnson To Create Makeup

Betsey Johnson has signed on with Inter Parfums to launch perfumes, personal care products, and makeup.

First on the agenda is a retooling of her original perfume from 1982. "It was a favorite, one of those do-it-yourselfers," she said. "We got as close as we could [to the original formula]," she said of new fragrance with Inter Parfums at a press conference in her New York showroom.

Betsey feels pretty strongly about having a scent in her lineup, explaining, "I think that after some kind of clothing existence, a designer needs a fragrance. It's just like you have dessert after dinner."

 Betsey Johnson repeated what she told a reporter months ago at Paper magazine's 25th-anniversary party this week: "I would die for a collaboration with Target or H&M," she said, "They should call me." Tonight for Fashion's Night Out, she drives between her stores in a pink convertible. - WWD

When I get some spare time, maybe I should call Target and H&M to start a campaign. I heart Betsey in a deep place.
